The Short Answer

Spend day one around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, day two on Hanoi's historic and cultural landmarks, and day three on either Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay or a slower neighbourhood-and-food day. This sequence keeps the most walkable sights together and leaves the longest outing until you have settled in.

Stay near the Old Quarter if this is your first visit, but choose the French Quarter or West Lake when you prefer quieter evenings. Hanoi traffic can make short distances take longer than expected, so avoid placing attractions from opposite sides of the city in the same half-day.

Day 1: Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter

Start with Hanoi's most walkable and atmospheric district.

Begin beside Hoan Kiem Lake before the pavements become busy. Walk past Ngoc Son Temple, then continue into the Old Quarter's narrow commercial streets. The area rewards slow exploration: look for traditional shop houses, hidden courtyards and small cafes rather than trying to tick off every street.

Use the afternoon for the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre or the National Museum of Vietnamese History. In the evening, build a food crawl around dishes such as bun cha, pho, banh cuon and egg coffee. Choose busy, clean stalls and order smaller portions so you can try more than one place.

  • Walk the lake and Old Quarter early or after sunset for cooler conditions.
  • Carry small cash for markets, cafes and street-food stops.
  • Cross roads at a steady, predictable pace and follow local pedestrians when unsure.

Day 2: Hanoi's history, temples and neighbourhoods

Group the Ba Dinh and Temple of Literature areas to limit backtracking.

Start around Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh complex, checking the official opening schedule before you go. Continue to the One Pillar Pagoda and then the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's historic centre of scholarship. Modest clothing is useful for religious and memorial sites.

After lunch, choose between the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Hoa Lo Prison Relic. The ethnology museum suits travellers interested in Vietnam's diverse communities, while Hoa Lo offers a more compact historical visit close to the city centre. Finish at West Lake or Truc Bach Lake for a quieter evening.

  • Do not schedule the Ho Chi Minh complex late in the day without checking hours.
  • Allow buffer time between sights because traffic conditions vary.
  • A private car is convenient for families; ride-hailing works well for lighter itineraries.

Day 3: Choose the right day trip

Your best third day depends on scenery, travel time and the rest of your Vietnam route.

Choose Ninh Binh for limestone landscapes, a sampan ride and rural scenery. Choose Ha Long Bay when Hanoi is your only base and a cruise is a priority, although a day tour involves a longer road journey. If you are continuing to Ha Long for an overnight cruise, keep day three in Hanoi instead of duplicating the experience.

A relaxed city day can be just as rewarding. Explore the French Quarter, visit a specialist coffee shop, book a cooking class or join a guided food walk. This option is especially sensible during poor weather or after a late arrival.

  • Ninh Binh: best for active scenery and countryside.
  • Ha Long Bay: best for travellers without an overnight cruise elsewhere in the itinerary.
  • Hanoi slow day: best for food lovers, families and travellers avoiding a long transfer.

Where to stay and how to pace the trip

The Old Quarter gives first-time visitors the easiest access to restaurants, evening walks and tour pickups. The French Quarter feels broader and calmer, while West Lake offers resort-style hotels and more space. Ask whether your hotel room faces the street if noise affects your sleep.

Three days is enough for Hanoi's essentials, but four days is better when you want both a Ninh Binh excursion and unhurried city time. Add arrival and departure days separately when your flight lands late or leaves early.
